Podravka’s Kalnik plant situated in Varaždin reached higher production in July than for the past five years. This positive trend continued in August and in the first few days of September. Forty-five tons of vegetables are processed daily in this plant. Work in three shifts has been introduced in order to preserve the quality of raw materials, which is particularly high this year. One hundred and sixty seasonal workers joined the full-time employees. The figures show that this year’s total processing of vegetables will surpass last year’s total by more than 40%. For example, this was a good cucumber season, so that two million jars of cucumbers have been processed. “Stela” pepper which is currently being purchased will increase the production of “Ajvar” in relation to last year. In fact, 2000 tons of peppers were purchased last year while the plan for this year is to purchase 2500 tons.

Financial aid from Varaždin County has certainly contributed to the increased volume of production. This year’s production and many other issues related to the growth and processing of peppers will be discussed at “The Day of Peppers”, an event which will take place in Varaždin on 11 September. In the morning, pepper producers and suppliers will attend a professional meeting organised in the Kalnik plant. They will have the opportunity to visit the biggest vegetable producer in the Varaždin area and make a tour of the Kalnik manufacturing plant. In the late afternoon, a promotional event called “Stroll and dance the Salsa with Podravka’s pepper-based dishes” will be held on the main town square. For this occasion, gastro-promoters will prepare dishes in a gigantic pan.
