GRI is an international non-profit organization founded in 1997 with the aim of achieving excellence in reporting on sustainable development. The guidelines for reporting to the GRI are the focus of this framework, and the other module elements are being added to it such as Sectot supplements and Protocols along with indicators which provide for the companies an exceptionally quality and effective creation of the report which is at the same time comparable as well as adapted to the specifics of particular economic branches and sectors.

After many demands GRI has begun in 2007 researching the possibility of developing an individual Sector supplement specialized for sustainable development issues in the sector of global food industry. This was the reason for focusing on the group of food companies that have a significant sustainable impact on the environment where they run their business and and which are not focused on retail business, tobacco production and production of alcoholic beverages

In order to give GRI an opportunity to get a more hig standard insight of the specifics of the reporting on sustanable development in the global food industry, the reports that have focused on two issues have been chosen for a more detailed analysis:

1. What is the frequency rate of reporting on the GRI indicators in the food industry?

2. What specific subjects of the sustainable development framework are most frequently being covered in the food industry and what is their connection to the subjects covered by the GR3 Guidelines of reporting on sustainability of GRI?

Podravka has been the only Croatian member of the World Business Council for Sustainable development for many years, and as of last year, Podravka has been the member of the World Business Forum and also one of the founders and members of the Croatian Business Council for Sustainable Development. Podravka has also recognized the importance of reporting on sustainable development in order to provide better quality of life for present and future generations and to reduce the unfavourable impacts on the society and the environment.

After the successfully written first Sustainable Development Report 2005 of the Podravka Group in compliance with the most acceptable world standard on sustainable development reporting G2 Guidelines of GRI, for the second time, at Podravka, another cycle of reporting in compliance to the G3 Guidelines of GRI has begun.
